Our blog is 1 year old! Cadeau – les statistiques!

Dear Readers,
Today is a joyful anniversary ai??i?? our blog is 1 year old! Our first post appeared on March 14th 2016, and since then we’ve published 11 more which is almost 1 per month.Ai?? Want to know more about how ‘Academic wor(l)ds’ fares in term of numbers and stats? Read on…

To celebrate l’anniversaire de notre blog we prepared a little cadeau ai??i?? a bit of data on how the page is doing in terms of statistics. Perhaps this will be of interest for other science bloggers or academics who are thinking of setting up their own blogs and are wondering what kind of traffic they can expect.

Firstly, we are glad to reportAi?? a visible growth in our readership, as shown in the graph below which covers year 2016.

A word of explanation: Unique visitors are the amount of different IPs that have visited the blog (independent of how many times).

In 2016 there have been around 5200 visits from different IPs to the blog.

Visits are the amount of times each visitor (every IP) came to our site ai??i?? statistically 1.59 per person.

‘Pages’ correspond to blog posts ai??i?? this number shows how many times all blog posts were opened in total – almost 19 thousand!

Statistically, one visit amounts to seeing 2,25 pages.

The next two columns of the graphAi?? are a bit less informative – a hit is an opening of any piece of data ai??i?? so if a post with 10 pictures is viewed once, that counts as 10 hits. We usually donai??i??t have that much different data in our posts, thatai??i??s why hits do not differ much from pages. Bandwidth corresponds to amount of data transferred.

In 2016 September was the best month in terms of visits ai??i?? 2,069 unique visitors. The best day of the week was Wednesday and the most popular hours for readers toAi?? visit are 9am and 2 pm.

All our blog posts so far are written in English, but we have readers from all around the globe.

In 2016 the largest amount of page viewings came from France, followed by US and Canada (who knew?).

UK came forth, Germany – fifth. A gratifying 529 page viewings came from Poland 😉 An average visit lasted 162 sec.

We were happy that our posts found an audience also beyond the blog itself. Two posts have been shared by the Warwick PhD experience blog,Ai??and two by the Times Higher Education blog.

In 2017 the blog continued to gain momentum.

We were glad to see Hypotheses shared Sixianai??i??s post on vilifying fat from their twitter account.

Now for data from 2017. The graph below sheds a bit of light on our blog’s performance since January.

We have already had over 1,500 unique visitors this year, but unfortunately the number of visits per visitor and pages per visit decreased, and so has the time spent on the site. Perhaps this is connected to the smaller amount of publications (only one post this year) ai??i?? but our authors are already thinking of juicy academic topics to attract more readers and keep them hooked!

This year Friday is the most popular day and 1am the most popular time to drop in for a visit.

In 2017 the USA overtook France in terms of amounts of visited pages (1950). Canada follows, later Russia and UK. Commentators are not sure if the slump in UKai??i??s position and the rise of Russian Federation is to be attributed to the aftermath of Brexit.Ai?? Singapore is on the podium with 24 pages visited from IPs based in this country.

Over 85 % of visitors get to the page by typing the address in the browser, opening a bookmark or through an email link. About 8% get here through links on external pages (mainly Facebook, but also the main hypotheses page, Johannesai??i??s home page...), only about 5% enter the blog through search engines.

Visitors got to our site by searching phrases such as: academic names, discursive practices, academic jargon, research in humanities in the area of semiotics in america, but also, curiously ai???anythingai??i??.

In general, we feel the blog has become a useful platform for us to communicate our research and some general reflections on academia & beyond (such as our post summing up year 2016) in a less formal way.Ai?? We are looking forward to another year of blogging.

If our blog could make a wish, it would be to receive more comments from readers – to know what they think of all this academic discourse.Ai?? ;-)Ai??
